History of ZAZ Cars

ZAZ Car Manuals PDF & Wiring Diagrams above the page.

ZAZ - Zaporizhya Automobile Plant is a Ukrainian enterprise that has a complete cycle of production of cars, including stamping, welding, painting, bodywork and car assembly.

The chronicle of the Zaporizhya Automobile Building Plant has been underway since the creation by the Dutchman by origin of the colonist Abraham Koop of an enterprise specializing in the production of agricultural machinery and equipment.

So 1863 in the city of Alexandrov (the so-called until 1921 the city of Zaporizhya) was established factory for the production of agricultural implements.

After the October Revolution, it was reconstructed and expanded, in the years of the first five-year plans it began to produce combines. During the WW2 it was completely destroyed, and after its completion it was restored and re-equipped.

In 1960 the serial production of the first small cars Zaporozhets (model ZAZ-965) began at the plant.

During the Soviet period of the history of the plant, several models of Zaporozhets were mastered, which, despite its somewhat insulting nickname "tin can", was gradually gaining popularity (this was the cheapest car in the years of stagnation).

At the end of the 1970s, the modernized ZAZ-968M-03 car with a 45 hp engine came off the assembly line of the plant.

In total (from 1960 to 1994), 3422444 Zaporozhets vehicles were manufactured in the city of Zaporozhye and air-cooled engines in the city of Melitopol.

In 1987, serial production of Tavria family cars in Zaporozhye and liquid-cooled engines in Melitopol began.

By the beginning of the 1990s, ZAZ brought its production to 80,000 cars a year. But after the collapse of the Soviet Union, the plant began hard times.

Production fell, the turn of the day was the question of a radical restructuring of the entire plant. Nevertheless, ZAZ was very slowly but surely chosen from the gravest crisis situation. The output of motor vehicles in 1995 was 103 thousand units.

The Ukrainian leadership, perfectly aware that without foreign firms can not do (there are intensive negotiations with the Korean firm Daewoo and the American concern General Motors), still trying to arrange the production of domestic cars. This is a three-door ZAZ-1102 "Tavria" and its five-door modification ZAZ-1105 "Dana", equipped with engines of 51 hp.

After the last legal formalities and a joint venture under the name "AvtoZAZ-Daewoo" were successfully settled in May 1998, the life of the leader of the Ukrainian car industry has undergone significant changes.

The release of a qualitatively new car "Tavria Nova" was renewed. Works on the preparation of production have been completed and a large-scale assembly of cars of the European level Lanos, Nubira and Leganza has been started at the Ilyichevsk plant of auto aggregates (IZAA).

2003 The plant changes its form of ownership and becomes a Closed Joint-Stock Company with foreign investment "Zaporizhya Automobile Building Plant".

2004 A qualitatively new production facility was created at the enterprise. The full-scale production of VAZ-21093 and VAZ-21099 cars, Lanos (T-150), Opel Astra G started.

2005 ZAZ designers designed the Lanos-van car, the IZAA HRA was equipped with production facilities for the production of I-VAN buses based on the TATA chassis.

Now the plant produces a slightly updated model of "Tavria" (hatchback) and pseudo-sedans on its base "Slavuta", as well as their modifications, and assembles from car kits of Daewoo cars.
